Based in Washington, D.C., Caracas Wire became fully operational in October 2016 when Dr. Michael M. McCarthy launched the strategic advisory firm.
The firm harnesses our CEO’s deep expertise in Latin American politics and U.S. foreign policy and draws on dual local knowledge of Caracas and Washington built through over a decade of experience working in both capitals.
We source information from partners working in the national security, energy, financial, private sector, and electoral spaces. We are fluent in English and Spanish and we travel to the region on a regular basis.

Founder & CEO
Michael M. McCarthy
Michael M. McCarthy is a recognized expert on Latin American politics and society and U.S. foreign policy with well over a decade of experience working in Washington, D.C. and Caracas. He is the founder and CEO of Caracas Wire LLC.
He is also Adjunct Professor at George Washington University's Elliot School for International Affairs and Research Fellow at American University’s Center for Latino & Latin American Studies.
Previous experiences include International Associate Venebarómetro Polling (2014-2017), Senior Research Consultant-Woodrow Wilson Center Latin America Program (2016-2017), Senior Analyst-Carter Center Venezuela Presidential Election Study Missions (2012-2013), Adjunct Professor Johns Hopkins SAIS (2012-2013), Fulbright and Inter-American Foundation Fellowships (2008-2009), and Research Associate at the Council on Foreign Relations (2002-2004).
He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. (cum laude) in political science and history from Bates College.
